Chapter 12 - [Part 1]

Title: Pearldrops. Author: Яįє 12. Obsessed loveLove itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away.
The stars twinkled, bright little dots that lit up the sulky night sky. It was one of those nights when everything felt right. Yeah, it sure was. I punched my fist victoriously in the air as I flopped contentedly onto my bed, staring through the window out into the vast darkness.
‘What’s got into you, man?’ Lava had asked over dinner when I couldn’t stop grinning stupidly at him. Having someone who understood you like the back of his hand could be a blessing in disguise.
‘Ahh, it’s a lass,’ he affirmed when I stared into space dreamily, ignoring him.
‘Aquarelle eh?’ he asked. He didn’t need a reply to know that he had struck lottery’s top prize.
Relle, the new girl in class, the beauty queen, was a mermaid. I needed to tell Lava, someday.
Rewinding the tape back to this afternoon and clicking the mental replay button—just before leaving, she had smelled so sweet and looked so pretty in my oversized shirt that she had made ‘plain’ looked ravishing.
No, saying she was pretty was doing her injustice. She was heaven.
I sighed, satisfied when I relished the moment our lips touched. I had felt like the luckiest guy on earth. Who would have thought that eavesdropping would be so rewarding? Right before my geography class, I had heard voices coming from the stairway when Relle was stalling in the Ladies.
It’s a pity her twin’s still missing on her eighteenth birthday. Another lonely occasion she would rather miss.
It was a guy’s voice, deep and sonorous.
Relle is much stronger than you give her credit for.
This time it was higher-pitched, a tone I recognized as Aquamarine’s.
Learning about Aquarelle’s birthday was nothing I had in mind. It was totally unexpected. Knowing that nobody was going to celebrate it with her sucked. Of course, I had jumped to the maiden’s rescue. I would be her knight in shinning armour, except that I didn’t own a horse. An opportunity not to be missed, I reminded myself as I weighed the odds of bringing a mermaid home.
She wasn’t intimidating. She was beautiful, she surfed, she didn’t speak slang and she was the girl of my dreams. She was the only girl I had been crushing on for as long as evolution. Crazily, she was a mermaid and I had fallen in love with a…fish.
It didn’t matter who she was, I had reasoned. I wanted to see her smile. With that, I skipped class, raced home and started tidying. Like they always say ‘a good impression is a good start’. Not like there was much to do anyway. Lava and I constantly kept the house clean. We were neat freaks. He did the shopping and I did the housekeeping. As my internal monologue carried on with Lava snoring in the other room, my thoughts lingered on to today’s date.
29 FebruaryProfoundly disturbing was the fact that today was also somebody else’s birthday. It was mine.
And it had been the best birthday ever.
Not that I enjoyed birthdays. Neither was I used to enjoying them. When your birthday goes missing most of the decade, you don’t want to be sitting around waiting for it to reappear. Thankfully, Lava had helped cleared the mess Aquarelle had left behind in the bathroom when he returned from surfing. He didn’t say a word though I guessed he thought I was on another birthday fad.
The boy’s going crazy. It was written all over his face.
He had his reasons, obviously. For the past years, I was known for doing stupid things on my birthday. Like dancing in the middle of bikini beach, almost getting myself raped by naked women. Dyeing my hair an outrageous orange, surfing when a typhoon was approaching…
These things you do when your old folks aren’t ‘round to tell you off. Stepping forcefully on the brake when I realized where I was headed to—another blind commemoration of my presumably dead parents, I sighed. Strange things were beginning to happen when Aquarelle showed up, and I had a premonition that even stranger things were about to occur.
Sure, there were questions and, I had my suspicions. I needed answers and I was not going to get any until I got
home.
***
It was Saturday morning, exactly a week after my birthday.
“You’re leaving without me?” Lava asked while feigning a hurtful look.
“Yea. It’s gonna be an eighty mile drive along the highway into town and—“ I said, punching him lightly on the arm.
“—I’ll be bored to death,” he finished.
“Besides…I thought somebody was so fired up about building the latest 'in' surfboard just yesterday…’ I trailed off, arching my eyebrows at him and sure enough, he resigned immediately.
“Darn. That means dinner’s on me tonight,” Lava groaned.
I chuckled as I clambered out into the garage, sliding into the leather seat of my shiny red motorbike. It was a farewell gift from Rick, who was ten years older and had been my dorm-mate, weeks ago. He was moving in with his girlfriend and they were going to get hitched this fall. My mind went into overdrive when I realized Rick had left us, his all-time buddies, for a girl. Was I happy for him? Sure yes. Yet, somehow I was not pleased. The beginnings of a twinge of jealousy gnawed at the back of my mind. I was going to miss having him around…Shrugging it off, uncomfortable with this unfamiliar sensation, I ignited the engine.
Slowing easing out onto the dirt track, the motorbike revved to life when I stepped on to the accelerator. The rising sun had only just begun to burn away the morning mist and it was time for some soul-searching.
In fact, it was long overdue.

Hello. My name is liying, without any spacing in between.
I'm obviously a girl, if it isn't obvious enough.
I also have this super, uber, long name which says
Any one will do, its your choice.
My awesomeness can't be contained in such a teeny-weeny box because i'm sensational.
Yes, I'm loved, bayy-beh. I blog about everything under the sun and anything that's the past, present and the future. My profile page is non-existent, because its not long enough.
