Spare a thought for the ones who are doing our saikang.

I have been seeing this almost everywhere on the newspapers. Its seriously unbelievable and I'm finally understanding why expatriates hate us so much. The following information is taken from the net and straitstimes.com

Article says: MORE than 100 residents gathered at a local playground yesterday to voice their objections to a foreign worker dormitory planned for Serangoon Garden.

Current situation: Workers have moved into the dormitories and there's even a 10m buffer zone between them and residents.

Think you understand singaporeans? Think again. Let's take a look at what they have to say.

My objection to the dorm has never been just about the welfare of Gardeners, but also the welfare of Singaporeans of every creed living in Singapore.Changing the way in or out of that dorm compound is just shifting the problem from one place to the other.

It doesn't resolve the problem. AMK residents should voice their concerns if they have any, and I am sure they do have concerns.The idea of having a dorm there is just poor planning. It's like wearing a dress for a cocktail party, and then putting on flip-flops to go with it.I have a feeling that the dorm's go-ahead has to do with Mr Mah's ego.

He most probably made the decision a long time ago, and refused to give in to the wishes of the residents of SG. In addition, I think only Mr Mah could have come up with such a silly and simplistic 'solution' to the problem - Serangoon Gardeners not happpy? Oh, just change the exits lah. Mr Mah has a record of making simplistic policies - 'Oh, traffic jam ah? Just increase the price for using the road lah.' I have to clarify before I get sued, though.

The above is just my hunch as to what transpired. It may or may not be a fact, so please don't sue me for just making a guess without evidence. Thanks.

Isn't this lady owning? The sentences in red and in italics just goes to show how she isn't supporting 'cohabiting' with foreign workers. What's worse is that she actually has the nerve to worry about being sued when she's being so selfish and saying things SOOOO loud.

i was initially put off when i read about the serangoon gardens residents reaction towards the fw. but thinking about it now.. was the media depiction of the residents accurate? the ministers tried to calm the residents, but what if our millionaire ministers are the ones staying at serangoon gardens?

I suppose if the plan by the government is to increase the plot ratio of Serangoon Garden to build a 5-star luxury apartment at the same site, the residents at SG will not be complaining about the trucks, crane, noise, traffic congestion, bus load of foreign workers going in and out of the site and most of all, the ang mohs who will come live next to them as neighbours, sharing the same food court and shopping center.

I am glad that I am not living at SG. I cant imagine myself having to put up with such a self centered community.

This was an eye-opener for me. Here I am feeling disgusted while they are out there still 'throwing our garden city's face'. Okay, frankly, i can relate to their concerns.

Let me do a serious confession.
I have always been afraid of foreign workers, mainly because they are always appearing in headlines as crime operators.
I have made a joke out of them, foreign workers, once.
I have discriminated them, once.
I'm one of those people who look at these foreign workers and instantly think of terrorists.
I'm one who looks at them and go 'eww. they're so dirty.'
I'm the one who can't wait to stand a hundred metres away from the indian foreign workers when i'm on the mrt.
I'm one of those who point to an indian worker and go 'eh, look at that bangla.'
I'm guilty of all the above and more.

Recently, I realised we shouldn't have such mindsets.
Not all of them are like that, like how we think they are.

They are actually normal human beings, just like us, who come to singapore in search of their ricebowls. They are here to find a future for themselves, why are we stopping them? They, like us, are here to make a proper living.

Count ourselves lucky that they're in fact, doing all the pariah jobs in our society. They are the ones who are building our city. Everytime, my bus to school comes across a construction site, i see the workers struggling away under the hot sun. They even have to work when its pouring, such that you'll see them running for shelters when the thunder starts.
I feel a tinge of pity, but what do i do? Continue reading my book on the bus and wait for the heartwrenching scene to pass.

Do I have to mention that construction sites are accident-prone? Some chinese worker fell to his death while working on one of the buildings. I use 'some' because i'm not sure of his name and i mean no disrespect. His body had probably been sent home already, but what i think we should do? Give him an entire column under the orbituary page and applaud his courage.

For being able to make it here, (alone, maybe) and allowing us, selfish singaporeans to trample on.
Can you imagine their wages? Its so meagre compared to us and that's enough to make them happy for years and enough to make them stay in this FREAK city for a hundred more years.

Well, why this sudden realisation you ask me.
Because a lady i read in the papers inspired me to peek at the bright side of foreign workers.

They actually have two faces.
One, the dark side, when we take them at face value.
Two, the bright side, which very little people actually see.

This lady, she was amazing in a way where she actually contributes free refreshments for tired workers. Her savings were generously used for such contributions which singaporeans would have thought pathetic and worthless. She has even become their 'mother' and 'friend'. After reading her views on how singaporeans treat her friends, (here i mean the foreign workers), i'm considering changing view points.

Come to think of it, there're always reports on maid abuse.
One change we should adopt,(and start RIGHT now), my fellow singaporeans,
